Overcoming Obstacles

I truly believe obstacles are put in our way to see if what we want is worth fighting for. Two weeks ago we finally moved into our dream home after 14 months of pursuing our goal relentlessly {#relentlesspursuit}. To say 2016 was a difficult year is an understatement, in particular, the last quarter of the year. Everything relating to the move we had to endure twice. For example, we had to apply for retention planning twice to sell our home, we changed solicitors during the process which left us two sets of legal costs. We sold our family home twice within a nine month period, we bought our dream home twice and at one stage we had deposits on two different homes at the same time. 2016 was a year of multiples and that magic number was two. The house we wanted to purchase had a series of compliance and planning issues and the vendors selling the house were going through a divorce. We faced obstacle after obstacle obtaining and finalising our goal. Once we became aware of the pattern and its significance we accepted the road ahead was going to be bumpy and we adjusted our sails to suit as much as humanly possible. No one would have batted an eyelid or blamed us if we had given up on our dream and purchased another home. The road was so bumpy, challenging, frustrating and exhausting all at the same time. When obstacles arise you simply change your direction to reach your goal; You do not change your decision to get there.

Obstacles do not block the path, they are the path. For us, this path was destined to lead us where we needed to go. The more obstacles we overcame the closer we came to achieving our goal. We gained strength, courage and a belief that together we are greater than any of the obstacles laid out before us and there were many. After waiting for what seemed an eternity to finally get home when we did arrive nothing worked. The boiler needed replacing, it was winter the boiler was on life support and finally gave up the ghost the day it snowed. The windows need to be replaced, one of the panes fell out when my husband tried to open the window. The house is freezing, poorly insulated, that's another job that needs doing. The appliances were all filthy and had to be removed and replaced with new ones. Some fire bricks fell out of the chimney stack the other day, there is a guy coming this Saturday to repair it. The garden hasn't been maintained in many years, trees are overgrown and out of control. The septic tank is filled to the brim, the pump has failed and needs replaced. To say the house is haemorrhaging money is an understatement. After working so hard and sacrificing so much last year it seems we are destined for another year of financial hardship. More obstacles to look forward too over the coming months. And we have never been happier! How is that possible?

We are exactly where we are supposed to be at this point in our lives, no matter what turmoil or madness is happening around us we are able to cope. We simply take each task, one at a time and tick it off the list. The list keeps growing and we keep ticking away at it #relentlessly. You see all problems become smaller if you don't dodge them but confront them. What we've accomplished over the past year is HUGE, how? You measure the accomplishment by the size of the obstacles you had to overcome to reach your goal. We made it because the fire inside of us burned brighter than the fires around us. Sometimes life will hit you on the head with a brick {in our case a quarry} don't lose faith. Don't let mistakes and disappointments of the past control and direct your future.

What I learned from 2016 and this experience is this; patience. It's not when we want something to happen it's when the environment and circumstance are right that it happens. Sometimes we are guilty of pushing too hard when the truth is, it's not the right time, we have something more to learn or to give. Accepting this can be liberating and a huge relief. Our house purchase was completely out of our control. The only thing we could absolutely control was how we reacted to everything that was out of our control. You can't control everything, sometimes you just have to let go, relax and let life work it out. It was nothing short of a miracle we ended up at our final destination. The thing about miracles is this; You have to believe in them for them to occur and I absolutely believe in miracles.

My Top Tips For Overcoming Obstacles

1. Obstacles are put in our way to see if what we want is worth fighting for. Ask yourself this simple question. How bad do you really want it? If you want it bad enough you will find a way to obtain it.

2. When obstacles arise you simply change your direction to reach your goal; You do not change your decision to get there. Adjust your sails and change course your destination remains the same, the path has simply being altered. God Speed!

3. The more obstacles you overcome the closer you become to achieving your goal.

4. All problems become smaller if you don't dodge them, take one problem at a time, deal with it and then move onto the next.

5. Measure the accomplishment by the size of the obstacles you have to overcome to reach your goal. When you reach your goal, reward yourself. Most importantly don't let mistakes and disappointments of the past control and direct your future.
