The Secret To Success

Is finding out what success really means to you. Everyone's idea of success if different. For me, success is living honestly and truthfully as my soul intended. It's having the freedom to live my life as I see fit surrounded by loving, caring people who appreciate my time and energy {see 7 Steps}. In a world where we are constantly plagued with social media, advertising and marketing success has been personified into materialistic wealth. If this is the success you seek there is nothing wrong with that and the points listed below will equally be beneficial. The success I have achieved is personal success, personal growth which in turn has allowed me to live the life my heart and soul desires and that includes luxury items. Money can't buy happiness, nor can it buy good health, it can buy you a house but not a home, it can buy you a bed, but not sleep. It can buy a clock but not time. It can buy a book but not knowledge. Money can buy a position but not respect, clothes but not class.  Money isn't everything. Success is determined not by wealth or position but by personal growth, experience and the ability to be a decent human being.

Recently I was at a conference/seminar the speaker was a well-known broadcaster and publisher who spoke about her success and experiences. She spoke about the "Blue Ocean Strategy" an area/idea of untapped new market spaces ripe for growth and "Red Ocean" whereby companies engage in head-to-head competition in search of sustained profitable growth. In today’s overcrowded industries competing head-on results in nothing but a bloody red ocean of rivals fighting over a shrinking profit pool.  Red oceans are all the industries in existence today – the known market space, where industry boundaries are defined and companies try to outperform their rivals to grab a greater share of the existing market. Cutthroat competition turns the ocean bloody red. Hence, the term 'red' oceans. Most probably businesses like yours and mine.  Blue Ocean are the inventors, creators of a new, uncontested market space that makes competitors irrelevant and that creates new consumer value often while decreasing costs. That's all well and good if you want to create the next best thing, be the next Susan Wojcicki or Sheryl Sandberg, work in tech and are on the brink of creating the next mind blowing APP. But what if you love to bake? What if your passion is custom jewellery making or you are a holistic entrepreneur? Just because we have a "red ocean" idea or business that does not make us any less successful or important than those with blue ocean ideas.

Success means many different things to many different people.  Arranging your life around money won't make you happy. Focus on your passion, not profit. If you are passionate about what you do the rest will follow, including profit. While it's all well and good being part of a community, don't let other people or ideologies define you or your business. Don't let them compartmentalise you, place you in a box and stick a label on your business, be it blue ocean or red ocean. While they might think they know you and what you do chances are their judgement is clouded by the very media they thrive in. No one knows your story, where you came from the struggles and sacrifices you made to get where you are today and the environment in which you pursued your goals. No one knows what you believe success to be, they can't know because they don't know you nor have they walked in your shoes. I'm not saying you can't learn from these type of people, it's good to have heroes. Borrow liberally from their advice, and you will find what works for you. Not everyone is in business to become rich and famous or the next best thing. There are holistic entrepreneurs people who love what they do and are not in it for the money, fame and fan base. For us it has to be a viable business, sustain our lives and sense of well-being but most importantly of all it ignites and sparks passion and drive in us.  The people who truly care about you aren't interested in your accomplishments and possessions; they're interested in you. It's called love, when you find people who love you, do everything you can to hold onto them, because they'll be your foundation.  I was raised to say please and thank you and if I learn something from someone or receive something I will always thank the person or organisation. How they respond to that "thank you" generally tells me all I need to know about that person or organisation. If I don't get a response I don't over analyse it, or try to understand it, I move on. It cost's zero cents to be a decent human being. Toughen up, these people do not care about you or your business. Concentrate your energy on your business and those who love you and want you to succeed and success will be imminent.

5 Things That Will Guarantee Success

1. Find out what success really means to you, what type of business you want to be involved in, what do you value most, what are you most passionate about?. Growth or profits, growth is more valuable than profitability. Whatever success means to you pursue it relentlessly #relentlesspursuit.

2. Work to prosper.  Those who are successful often go to work to get something accomplished. They work to make their dreams a reality, not just to get their eight hours in. They often have drive, passion and ambition. There are millions of people who go to work every day, yet many don’t put themselves in a position or mindset to prosper.

3 Focus on success. Write down some goals—It's my experience that if I can stay focused on what I want, I will get it no matter how many obstacles or challenges I am faced with. Stay focused on your goals, write them down, review them frequently and adjust your sails accordingly.

4. Surrounding yourself with like-minded people can limit your creativity, but if you seek out new perspectives, you grow faster and learn more. Step outside the box into other industries, workspaces and connect with different people, you will gain a lot of perspectives.

5. Don't let anyone compartmentalise you, place your business in a box and stick a label on it. No one knows your story or your journey, people do business with people they like and everyone likes someone who appreciates them.  The most powerful tool you have in creating success in your life is to appreciate other people. Reply to that tweet or tag and thank someone for connecting, it will take 10 seconds.

Money isn't everything, I'll take the health, happiness, home, sleep, time, knowledge, respect and class every time. I was asked once, "you're a smart lady why aren't you rich". I replied, "you're a rich lady why aren't you smart". For the record I am rich, I have a lot of things money can't buy and I am successful. I don't seek validation from anyone and neither should you. Good luck on your journey to creating a life filled with success {whatever that means to you} Thank you for reading my blog and sharing it, I do appreciate you.
